Parks of Berkeley
Summerville, SC
The Parks of Berkeley will be planned and managed as a mixed-use development next dynamic economic center of metro Charleston. The site comprises over 4,000 acres of loblolly timber, planted in blocks over former wetlands and planned for phased transition over thirty years.
I was asked to create an ecologically driven vision and set of principles to guide the project as a consultant to Hart Howerton. I developed a series of concepts to shape the open space framework, to optimize habitat and promote land resiliency. Key among the strategies were recommendations for managing the forest transition from a degraded, loblolly monoculture to a species-rich, thriving matrix. This work occurred in numerous design charrettes and I also attempted to capture some of the core ecological in simple diagrams whose audience would be mostly developers, foresters, engineers and other designers. I am greatly indebted to the work of Richard TT. Forman for many of the ideas created for this project.
